Did you know that elephants are actually ballerinas? They are ‘digitigrade’, what means that they actually walk on their tip-toes.
But in the wild, elephants and other pachyderms are threatened. Habitat loss, degradation, fragmentation, illegal killing, poaching, illegal international trade in live wild-caught animals, tourist trade, human-animal conflict,... A long list of threats that makes pachyderms endangered species.
And that's the reason why I've started this website on Sept. 1, 2009. To inform the people about elephants and other pachyderms, to highlight their problems and threats, in the hope more people will be interested in the behalf of these animals, and will fall in love with these beautiful creatures!!!
The last few years PACHYDERM has grown extensively and is now the biggest and most complete source concerning pachyderms in the world. PACHYDERM has grown from a news source to a real organisation focusing on pachyderms and their conservation. Anno 2015 PACHYDERM contributes actively to the conservation of elephants, rhinos and hippos by working together with conservation organisations and foundations, in- and ex-situ.
Now, what exactly can you find on this website?

The elephant herd at Howletts is currently made up of 16 African elephants which makes it the largest captive African elephant herd in Europe. The large size of the herd helps encourage natural behaviour and this in turn means that they are a very successful breeding herd. The breeding bull, Jums, has fathered some 17 calves, most of which are still at the park.
