The elephant herd at Howletts is currently made up of 16 African elephants which makes it the largest captive African elephant herd in Europe. The large size of the herd helps encourage natural behaviour and this in turn means that they are a very successful breeding herd. The breeding bull, Jums, has fathered some 17 calves, most of which are still at the park.

A herd of seven African elephants, born in Kruger National Park in South Africa, was translocated to Swaziland in 1994. When scheduled to be culled due to overpopulation, the herd was brought to San Diego on a truly "jumbo" plane in August 2003. A fellow herdmate from Africa followed in October 2009, by way of the Lowry Park Zoo in Florida. Since their arrival at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, their numbers have grown!
